Katy families have access to some genuinely impressive parks — the challenge is knowing which ones are worth the drive and which are just another subdivision amenity. Harris County Precinct 4 runs several big-acreage parks west of Houston with real features: a 32-acre park with miniature golf and a stocked lake, an 876-acre wilderness with a 176-acre fishing reservoir, and a sensory garden park that's completely fenced. How we picked these

We looked for parks within 15 miles of Katy's center that offer real features for families — stocked fishing, inclusive design, themed play areas, or significant acreage. Harris County Precinct 4 runs most of the best parks in this corridor and maintains them well. All picks are free and publicly accessible. Curated from official park sources and parent reviews, not paid placements.

Planning your visit

Katy parks are great year-round but peak season is fall (October–November) and spring (March–May) when Houston-area heat is manageable. Harris County parks close on major holidays — check before heading out on Thanksgiving or Christmas. For summer water fun, Nottingham Park (14 miles east near Houston's Energy Corridor) has a free seasonal splash pad. For more kids' events near Katy this week, see the Katy events page.

Katy Park Checklist

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen and bug spray — parks like Mary Jo Peckham Park see active mosquitoes and wood ticks May through October. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes.
  • One water bottle per person — drinking fountains exist at most Katy parks but occasionally go offline for maintenance. Pack heat-stable snacks: grapes, apples, trail mix hold up better than chocolate in summer heat.

Best Times to Visit

Playground surfaces can reach 150°F by late morning in summer. Visit before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. from May through September — metal slides and rubber matting cool quickly once the sun drops. Spring and fall (March–April, October–November) allow all-day visits. Nottingham Park and other Katy parks are busiest Saturday mornings due to youth sports and lightest on weekday afternoons.
