Forney's local park system anchors a quick-growing East Dallas County suburb, and the surrounding cities — Mesquite, Rockwall, Terrell, Heath, Kaufman — fill out the map with parks worth the short drive. We mapped the parks that work for kids across age ranges, from the local Forney Community Park to the regional standouts.
1. Forney Community Park (Forney)
Location: 241 S FM 548, Forney, TX 75126
Forney's local flagship — multiple playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball fields, hiking trails, basketball courts, and tennis courts on one large site. Splash pad (modeled after a grain elevator silo, nod to the farming heritage) runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Easy to spend a half-day here.
Parent tip: Splash pad opens at 10am — get there before that if you want playground-only time without splash-pad crowds.
Want to check if the fountains are running today? See live maintenance updates on the official Forney Community Park portal.
2. Towne Center Park (Heath) (Heath)
Location: 200 Laurence Dr, Heath, TX 75032
Soccer, football, and baseball/softball fields with a playground and a stone pavilion. Paved trails connect to surrounding neighborhoods, so families with bikes can ride in. Newer park — equipment in good shape.
Parent tip: Heath is small and Towne Center is the main public park — Saturday mornings have league sports games, so weekday afternoons are calmer.
Hours and amenities shift with the season — confirm today's on the Towne Center Park (Heath) city page.
3. Valley Creek Park (Mesquite) (Mesquite)
Location: 2482 Pioneer Rd, Mesquite, TX 75181
Green space with a playground, football field, baseball complex, fishing spots, and adult sports stations. Less crowded than the larger Mesquite parks, with a calmer neighborhood feel.
Parent tip: Fishing spots are catch-and-release. Kids under 17 fish free in Texas, no license required.
Planning a specific day? Check the Valley Creek Park (Mesquite) status page for closures first.
4. Samuell Farm Park (Mesquite) (Mesquite)
Location: 100 US-80, Mesquite, TX 75149
400-acre regional park with a welcome center, a lake, a playground, picnic areas, trails, and an iconic red barn that's the photo spot for every Mesquite family. Calm setting compared to neighborhood parks — feels rural even though you're 20 minutes from downtown Dallas.
Parent tip: Open 5am-11pm daily. The barn is the iconic photo backdrop — go at golden hour for the best shots.
5. DeBusk Park (Mesquite) (Mesquite)
Location: 1625 Gross Rd, Mesquite, TX 75149
40-acre park with the renovated KidsQuest playground — ADA-accessible play structure with adaptive equipment, baseball field, picnic pavilions, pet-friendly trail, and disc golf. Bigger than most neighborhood parks; designed for the multi-hour visit.
Parent tip: Renovated KidsQuest playground is the standout. Disc golf course is short and good for kid-introduction to the sport.
6. Ben Gill Park (Terrell) (Terrell)
Location: 1039 9th St, Terrell, TX 75160
100-acre central park with an accessible playground, 9 soccer fields, softball/baseball complexes, 6 tennis courts, an Olympic pool, a hiking/biking trail, and a large pavilion with a stage. The pavilion stage hosts summer concerts — pair an evening visit with live music.
Parent tip: Olympic pool is paid admission and seasonal. Playground and trails are free year-round.
Before you load up the car, review the Ben Gill Park (Terrell) page for maintenance or event closures.
7. Harry Myers Park (Rockwall) (Rockwall)
Location: 815 E Washington St, Rockwall, TX 75087
Rockwall's flagship — 13+ acres with an inclusive playground, splash pad, dog park, swimming pool, baseball fields, ponds, an amphitheater, and a skate park. The park parents recommend when out-of-towners ask where to take a wide age range of kids in one stop.
Parent tip: Splash pad runs March through October. Open 5am-11pm; mornings before 11am are calmest.
Keep tabs on routine cleanings and seasonal changes by visiting the Harry Myers Park (Rockwall) page directly.
How we picked these
Every pick is free, public, and has at least one full operating season. We weighed playground quality across age ranges, whether the park supports a multi-hour visit, shade and restroom access, and what East Dallas County parents on Google and local moms-group threads consistently flag. No paid placements.
Planning your visit
Forney and surrounding-area parks are open dawn to dusk (Forney Community Park stays open longer in summer). Plan playground visits before 11am or after 6pm from June through September. Pack water, sunscreen, and snacks. For more kids' events near Forney this week, see the Forney events page.
